Colloquium Expectations

What are your expectations for this class? In your own words, what is sustainability? How does sustainability (or ecological sense of place) relate to your chosen field of study? Can you identify any personal behaviors and/or attitudes that are unsustainable?

My expectations for this class are to expand my knowledge and awareness of nature.  Being in a Health Professions major, my main focus has always been about the human body and I have not had the opportunity to learn about nature too much, other than in pre-requisite courses such as biology and microbiology.  Linking together exercise and the human body with nature, can help to broaden my overall knowledge.  I also plan to learn about Florida’s nature, as I am from New Jersey and much of the plant and animal life of Florida is new to me.

Sustainability is the concept of economic, environmental, and social combined in human life.  For nature, sustainability is how it remains and changes over time.  Sustainability relates to my chosen field of study since the health field requires the human body to remain sustainable, just as nature does.  The body must cover each of the three dimensions of sustainability to obtain wellness.  In order for the human body to be sustainable, ecology must be as well.  Each of the biological systems contribute to the well being of humans.  Personal behaviors and attitudes that are unsustainable include littering and wasting.  Although littering a small piece of garbage may not seem like much, over time it adds up and hurts the environment greatly.  Wasting is also a very common behavior that is unsustainable.
